Virtual Box and Extensions: Are you being told you need to buy licenses?

thoma

Over the last several years our clients have remarked that aggressive sales tactics seem to be the norm from Oracle.  The team that sells Oracle Virtual Box is very aggressive in using download data to show clients that they need to purchase licenses.

With our clients, we tell them to slow down and ask these important questions first:

1) Are you actually using this outside of the PUEL grant

2) Who is using this at your organization and where?

3) Do you actually need it?

The overwhelming response is that this is being downloaded by developers, typically used on a laptop or virtual test instance.  Most clients can simply remove the offending software and be done with the sales team. In some cases, repeated downloads from IT staff can cause this issue to reoccur.  Oracle’s aggressive tactics can be defeated if you know what levers to pull!

Where is your organization at with the Oracle Virtual Box product?  Are you monitoring its use?
